We are delighted to announce the first event jointly organized by the Chinese Composer Community and the Composers Diversity Collective (CDC).
This special evening features Feng Mantian, one of China’s most celebrated musicians and a national treasure, who will present an in-depth lecture and live demonstration on the performance techniques and tonal characteristics of traditional Chinese instruments, including the ruan, bianzhong, and bianqing, and their creative applications in film and media scoring. Audiences can join us worldwide through Zoom with FREE RSVP.
Chinese instruments are more than symbols of Eastern culture—they are unique sonic colors that can inspire bold, creative scoring choices for film, television, and video games worldwide.

This masterclass will offer a rare opportunity to experience the intersection of traditional Chinese instruments and contemporary media composition.
Feng Mantian will share insights into the expressive capabilities of the ruan, bianzhong, and bianqing, and discuss how these instruments can inspire new sound palettes in film and game scoring.
The evening will include live demonstrations, open discussion, and an intimate opportunity for composers to engage directly with one of China’s most visionary artists.
For composers and creators passionate about film, game, or cross-cultural music, this is an unmissable event to witness how traditional sound meets modern storytelling.
About Feng Mantian

Feng Mantian is a renowned ruanxian artist and National Class One Performer of the China National Traditional Orchestra. Widely known as “the soul of the ruan,” he is a leading figure in preserving and revitalizing the art of this ancient instrument while bridging traditional Chinese culture with modern musical expression.
Born in 1963, Feng began studying violin at the age of four under Russian violinist Bachyev, and later studied the yueqin and zhongruan with his father, master musician Feng Shaoxian. In 1978, he joined the China National Traditional Orchestra, where he continues to perform as a soloist and has toured extensively across the world.
Over four decades, Feng has devoted himself to the preservation and development of ruanxian art. After 17 years of research, including studying X-ray blueprints of Tang-dynasty ruan preserved in Japan’s Shōsōin and building 47 prototypes, he successfully reconstructed the “Tang-style hidden-fret zhongruan” in 2009 — reviving a long-lost instrument of ancient China.
In 2014, Feng won the national championship on CCTV’s Brilliant Chinese, bringing the ruan to unprecedented public attention. Between 2019 and 2021, he founded the Mantian Band and toured globally with his concert series Under the Mountain, Above the Mountain, performing over 100 shows. His solo album Listening to the Ruan (2020) fuses Chinese poetic philosophy with contemporary sound, offering listeners a deeply meditative musical experience.
Feng has performed at major state and international events, including:
- A 2011 state visit to Russia with China’s national leaders;
- A 2013 special performance for Premier Li Keqiang and Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev;
- A 2016 performance for President Xi Jinping and former U.S. President Barack Obama;
- A 2019 cultural diplomacy concert for ministers from 18 countries in Latvia;
- Concert appearances at world-renowned venues such as the Kennedy Center (Washington, D.C.), Carnegie Hall (New York), Salzburg Festival (Germany), and Lucerne Festival (Switzerland).
In his performances, Feng often intertwines Chinese poetry and philosophy with instrumental improvisation, using the ruan as a voice of recitation. His music evokes the poetic spirit of ancient scholars like Tao Yuanming, Li Bai, and Su Shi—expressing both personal emotion and cultural reflection through sound.

- 2011年随中国国家领导人访问俄罗斯并演出;
- 2013年为李克强总理与梅德韦杰夫总理专场表演;
- 2016年受邀为习近平主席与美国总统奥巴马演出;
- 2019年为18国部长级代表在拉脱维亚文化会议上演奏;
